Agrostemma is also known by her old-fashioned, familiar name, “Corn Cockle.” New, silky petals unfurl from the tall buds each morning, waving on tall stems in the slightest breeze. My sister Michelle and I harvested pailfuls each morning before the wind had a chance to ruin the exquisite pure-white blooms, because most of our agrostemma was destined for bridal bouquets—an honour of which she is absolutely worthy. It was a joy to harvest the most special armful of all: for Michelle’s own wedding that same season. Agrostemma will always have a place in my garden, and in my heart.
