Early on a clear morning is my favourite time to harvest. The flowers are at peak hydration, everything is ripe with dew and scent, and the birdsong is an absolute chorus. The only other sounds are the swish of my boots through the wet grass and the rhythmic snip-snip of my clippers. What a joy it is to discover a bumblebee tucked inside the petals of a zinnia, still drowsy. Sometimes I have to nudge it half-drunk out of its flower; but as often as I can, I skip that one and leave the bee to sleep a a little longer. Like me, it has a long day of harvest ahead.
